Everything You Need to Know About Brazilian Waxes

It's been almost three decades since Brazilian wax was introduced to the United States by seven Brazilian born sisters, yet it still remains the most popular hair removal method in the United States. At Serene Wax Boutique, we take pride in being experts in Brazilian wax, so today, let's go over everything you need to know about the popular hair removal method.

1. What is a Brazilian wax?

Brazilian waxes differ from regular bikini waxes because hair is removed in the front, back and everything in between. A "landing strip" is typically left in the front, but some clients opt for everything removed. With a cleaner bottom, you can opt to have Vajazzling done - a temporary crystal tattoo placed in the bikini area, which has become a popular beauty trend.

2. How long does one appointment take?

On average, it takes 15 - 30 minutes. If you have done Brazilian wax in the past, you might want a speedy service; if you are new and want to take your time or are more prone to pain, feel free to to talk to your estheticians about your concern and ask to apply strips to smaller areas first.

3. How is Brazilian wax done?

The waxer will dip a wooden waxing stick into a pot of hot wax and then spread it onto your skin and hair. She will then apply a cloth strip over the still-warm wax, pressing firmly so the cloth, hair and wax adhere to one another. When the wax has cooled, she will pull the strip off, in the opposite direction of your hair growth, pulling the hairs out by the root. It is important that you choose a boutique that does not double dip into the pot of hot wax.

4. How long does my hair need to be beofre a Brazilian wax appointment?

Your hair needs to be at least 1/4 inch. Anything shorter than that will be too hard for wax to grab onto. So resist your temptation to use a razor before you come in.

5. What happens after a Brazilian wax?

Your esthetician may spread soothing lotion over the waxed areas. If you later develop bumps, redness or ingrown hairs, gently exfoliate the area with a body scrub and then smooth on a lotion or cleanser with alpha hydroxy acid. If you don't know exactly how to deal with your ingrown hair, you can come back to Serene Wax Boutique so our professional estheticians can take care of it for you.

6. What is a Hollywood wax?

Because Brazilian means everything off except for a "landing strip" possibly in the front, don't be surprised when the esthetician removes the hair between the buttocks, if you feel comfortable. Yes, hair does grow there.

7. What are some useful tips to keep in mind?

The first time may be the most painful, but frequent visits will cut down the pain factor. You can take an Advil before your appointment. Normally, you can go back every 2 - 4 weeks. After more visits, your hair will be thinner and finer.

Your skin is most sensitive when you consume alcohol. Make sure you do not drink alcohol at least 4 hours before your appointment. So indulge afterwards!

Try to avoid working out right after you treat yourself to a Brazilian wax to avoid irritation in your most delicate areas.
